He did evil because he had not set his
heart on seeking the Lord. 12:14
Footnote: Rehoboam's story is tragic because
he "had not set his heart on seeking the Lord." It is dangerous to put
off responding to God. God asks us for a firm commitment, and unless
we respond by trusting him completely, we will find ourselves alienated from
him.
And now you plan to resist the kingdom
of the Lord, which is in the hands of David's descendants. You are indeed a
vast army and have with you the golden calves that Jeroboam made to be your
gods. 13:8
Footnote: Jeroboam's army was cursed because
of the golden calves they carried with them. It was as though they had put sin
into a physical form so they could haul it around. Consider carefully the
things you cherish. If you value anything more than God, it becomes your golden
calf and will one day drag you down. Let go of anything that interferes with
your relationship with God.
What do you
think people, in general, value more than God? Status? Wealth? Comfort?
Any thoughts?
